The E Type was launched on the 16th March 1961 at the Geneva Motor show, the car was launched as a Coupe, it was designed by Malcolm Sayer. Jaguar started working on the E Type in 1957, the car was code named E1A, the XK150 was still in production when the development started in 1957. The E Type was launched with a 3. 8 litre 6 cylinder in line engine. It was known as the XKE in the USA. The E type was the replacement for the XK150. The E Type has similar mechanical features to the XK150 but the exterior was inspired by D Type racing car. The suspension was independent at the front and rear. The cost of buying the E Type was £2, 100. The Coupe was £100 more expensive than the roadster. The Coupe was a two-seater Grand Tourer but in 1966 a 2+2 Coupe was introduced in Coupe form only. The 2+2 car was 228 mm longer than the original car.
